The need for strengthening a reinforced concrete beam or a number of beams in a structure because of problems due to degradation of characteristics of materials with time, reduction in cross section, corrosion issue, wrong initial design, increase on load demand on building floors, and damaged by fire. As a consequence, these problems may lead to the existing steel bars in the beam to become unsafe or insufficient so in such cases, there are a number of solutions to be applied to make them safe or sufficient enough to bear the load such as addition of steel bars to the main reinforcement without increasing the cross section of the beam, another method is addition of steel bars and increasing the cross section area of the concrete. The final method is adding steel plates to the beam. Column maintaining means strengthening which is a process used to add or restore ultimate load capacity of reinforced concrete columns. seismic retrofitting, supporting additional live load, dead load that not included in the original design, to relieve stresses generated by design or construction errors, and to restore original load capacity to damaged structural elements. Therefore, maintaining or strengthening of R.C. Column is needed The load carried by the column is increased due to either increasing the number of floors or due to mistakes in the design, the compressive strength of the concrete or the percent and type of reinforcement are not according to the codes’ requirements, the inclination of the column is more than the allowable, and the settlement in the foundation is more than the allowable. Also, there are several techniques which are used to strengthen reinforced concrete columns. First method is reinforced concrete jacketing. Second method is steel jacketing. Last method is FRP confining or jacketing. |
