Lime kiln dust (LKD), which is a byproduct of lime production has been used as a chemical additive to improve the workability of clayey soils in some parts of the world. However, limited research has been conducted on the use
of LKD for modification or stabilization of subgrade soils. This study presents
the results of a laboratory investigation on the benefits of LKD for
stabilization of clayey subgrade soils. Five types of clayey soil from
different areas were selected and mixed with different rates of LKD. The soil
characterization of the native and LKD-treated soils were determined. The test results showed more than 100% improvement in
strength for the LKD-treated soil over untreated soil. The test results also indicated
that LKD reduces the soil plasticity and increases the workability of clayey
soil. |
