The occurrence of high destructive earthquakes and its impact on masonry tunnels in recent years in the MiddleEast has led to the growth of concerns about the sustainable operation of these structures. Although many studies have been performed on seismic retrofitting of bridges and buildings constructed with rubble stone, such studies are very rare in the field of tunneling. On one hand, lack of seismic design of tunnels built in Iran before the nineties and its location in the global earthquake belt and the occurrence of destructive earthquakes during the last twenty years (Bam 2003, Ezgeleh 2017) on the other hand, makes the Seismic retrofitting construction of old tunnels more visible. The occurrence of a 7.5 magnitude earthquake, in Ezgeleh in 2017, resulted in the increase of water leakage and cracks in some road tunnels, the issue of seismic retrofitting hence became mandatory. In this study, firstly, the stability of the current condition of the tunnel during the occurrence of probable earthquakes in the area was evaluated. The results showed that the existing support will not be able to withstand the dynamic loads. Two alternatives of steel fiber shotcrete and inner concrete lining were proposed in order to enhance the strengthening of the tunnel. The results of numerical analysis showed that the use of inner concrete lining has a higher ability to control the forces on the tunnel, especially in bending and shearing mode, and also less elements will be subjected to tensile forces.
